Batavia City Schools has a few grant-funded programs designed to help at-risk students. Current programs include SOAR (Skills, Opportunity, Attitude and Accountability, and Results) and My Brother's Keeper.
At the present time, SOAR is for 2nd-12th grade students and My Brother's Keeper is for 5th-12th grade young men of color. The overarching goal for this grant is to improve the social climate in each building, leading to a more supportive learning environment. SOAR is available to 230 or more students with a focus on those who are not in good standing (performing below a passing level in two or more classes OR who owe disciplinary consequences that have not been fulfilled), who are at risk of not graduating or have low performance in math. SOAR provides academic support with an emphasis on math (homework help and tutoring) and numerous hands on activities/clubs during the school year with an infusion of social-emotional learning and personal management (SOAR skills). The grant affords busing for all supported activities in addition to a district-wide violence prevention component.
My Brother's Keeper is a nationwide initiative started in 2014 by President Obama. Our MBK goal at BCSD is to increase the academic achievement and college and career readiness of boys and young men of color. It is also our goal to help them engage and connect with their families, the school community and the community as a whole.
